We have recently opened our first studio and a number of people have asked me what the difference is between a studio and a shop…It’s a fair question.

Ageism – it’s just a number!
I recently turned 50 and it doesn’t bother me…so why does it bother others??!!
My space in Dubai Studio City
As D3 is not ready yet I have found a fantastic space in Dubai Studio City. It is a great location which is super close to home and has a great NYC loft vibe.
D3: Joining an amazing project.
It’s official. I am now a fully licenced member of Dubai Design District. Although currently under construction, it’s going to be an amazing development once it’s complete with a focus on growing the Dubai fashion market.
Menswear Launch
I have been asked by a number of guys to create a menswear range – so I thought I would take the plunge.
I actually found it quite easy as a number of JHC womenswear pieces can be simply converted to menswear. For instance, I have modified the Ted Shorts and reinvented them for guys.
The only issue is that most of the guys in Dubai are very conservative in their dress. They wear t-shirts or polo shirts and jeans, shorts or chinos. So I’m not expecting the range to be a commercial success, but it’s been a fun experience.
So watch this space as we launch the JHC Menswear range on 28 March.
Lying On The Beach In Sri Lanka…
Sometimes you just need to take time to decompress and lying on the beach is my ideal way. Of course it seems that I can never totally switch off as that’s where I’m lying as I write this. I also cannot stop shopping. I love to buy from hawkers on the beach. I must have 100’s of sarongs from various beach outings – and now I have two more!!
Even though I’m lucky enough to live in Dubai where its nearly always sunny, it’s just not the same as the laid back atmosphere of a beach holiday and pottering around stalls and checking out hawkers selections is one of my favourite ways to chill.
Wholesale Experience
I recently went to London to check out a wholesale fashion exhibition which is one of the largest in the world and to be honest I was totally underwhelmed.
The clothes seemed to fit into three categories: designed for under 25 year olds, clubbing outfits and “nana” clothes.
It would seem that the fashion industry continues to ignore women aged over 35 years of age who still enjoy fashion.
That’s how JHC came into being and it appears that we are still operating in something of a niche market. It never ceases to amaze me how the fashion industry gives the impression that we disappear once we have kids and perhaps don’t have the figures we once had. That’s simply not true.
Still on a positive note, I did have a fantastic weekend with my girlfriends with lots of laughs.
The JHC Miracle Dress
The other day Charlie, a client I hadn’t seen for ages, arrived with her new baby Max. She introduced Max as her JHC miracle baby. Continue reading →
My First Look Book Photo Shoot
It is time for me to pick up the pace and launch my first look book. Michael from Michael Kruger Photography and I went back and forth on how we wanted it to look but once we narrowed down some options the final feel came together very quickly and we LOVE what we have come up with.
Styling With Orla
I am very pleased that Orla Lamb has officially joined the JHC team as our stylist. She will be putting style and body type advise to most pieces and will also be answering any questions you might have in her “Ask Orla” column, so be sure to tap into her excellent style tips.

2014 – The Year Of The Jumpsuit
Looking forward at the trends at JHC for 2014 you can expect to see more jersey and butter crepe. We are also in love with harem pants and any trouser with a dropped crotch! But our big trend for 2014 is the jumpsuit. Continue reading →
Accessories I Love – Boots
I live in Dubai where it is high 30s (or more) with gross levels of humidity for most of the year, but I’m in love and maybe a little obsessed, with boots.
My New Wardrobe
I guess it’s an occupational “hazard” but I do seem to own a large collection of clothes (don’t tell my husband I said that!) and whilst I love my house there was simply not enough room for all of my pieces.
From Concept to Reality
People seem to think that what I do is easy, so I thought I would share the process of developing a JHC piece with you and then you can decide.
My love/hate affair with shoes
My husband refers to me as an Imelda Marcos wannabe and even the boys have taken to commenting on any new shoe purchases. But I strongly believe that a good outfit can be destroyed by the wrong shoe choice and just by changing your shoes you can transform an outfit from day to night.
Fabrics I love and why….
Being at that time in my life when my internal thermostat seems to have a life of its own, the fabric that my clothes are made of is of vital importance to me. I do not need anything that is going to bring on a hot flush!
That’s why I am in love with cotton jersey and butter crepe.
Shopping in the mall vs. online
It surprises me how many women of my generation have yet to discover the convenience of shopping online.
I buy most things online now and whilst I have messed up a few times (especially with shoes but that’s another story!) overall I have been really successful in finding what I am looking for, often at a better price.
The worst things about my job…
Some days I have to wonder if it’s really worth it!
There is nothing like getting a call from your courier company to tell you they have lost your parcel to make your day – not! Especially when the parcel was meant to be delivered ages ago and it was the last piece.

The best things about my job…
The other day I met three women who were out shopping. Two had good figures and obviously were into fashion, the third not so much….
